The History of Us

On March 15th, 2009, Total Care Nursing Services celebrated its 15th year as a Medicare/ Medi-Cal certified home health agency. For us, those fifteen years reflected a sense of history, perspective and accomplishment. Yet, in truth, March 15th, is not our birthday; and the history of our company goes back much further than 1994.

Total Care Nursing Service was founded by a clinician, Joan Clark, who experienced the inequalities in our nation's healthcare system firsthand while working as a Registered Nurse during the late 1950's and throughout the 1960's. The disparities in care had created a major divide between patients of differing age, gender, race and socioeconomic status.



By the late 70's, the health care divide in Los Angeles could be characterized by the fragmentation of care delivery and a lack of responsiveness by providers to the needs of the community. Joan observed, through her experience working in the local area hospitals, patients discharged to unstable home environments struggling with little to no support.

She believed that everyone should have access to a high quality healthcare system and that belief led to the formation of her nursing registry, Personalized Home Care, in 1983.
